Gentle Care for Hands

Chemotherapy may cause temporary changes to nails, making them dry, brittle, discoloured or ridged and thereby posing an increased risk of infection.

Be sure to pamper your hands:

  • Wear rubber gloves when doing chores, especially those involving water.
  • Moisturize with a rich hand cream.
  • Soften cuticles with cuticle cream every day to fight dryness, splitting and hangnails; avoid pulling, cutting or tearing off dry cuticles.
  • Resist the temptation to have artificial nails or nail wraps applied, as the space behind the nails/wraps can trap bacteria.
  • Wear nail polish only if nails are not cracking or broken, as it can mask nail discolouration, lines and ridges. Be sure to use an oily, acetone-free polish remover, as acetone is sometimes harsh on fragile nails.

PROFESSIONAL TIP

Your feet will likely experience the same effects as hands and will also respond to the same loving care.

PROFESSIONAL TIP

Avoid biting your nails, as it may cause bacterial infection.
